What is that hot stew at the Convenience Store?
Hello! I am Ishio from Yokohama Meido Acupuncture Clinic.
Have you seen the steaming hot pot next to the register at 7-Eleven, Lawson, or FamilyMart? That is "ODEN". It is a traditional Japanese winter stew.
For those who are new to Japan, it might look a bit mysterious. But actually, it is super healthy, low in calories, and gentle on your body.
◆ The Taste of "Dashi"
Oden is simmered in "Dashi" (Japanese broth). If you are used to strong spices or heavy sauces, the taste might seem a little mild or "lacking punch" at first. But please try to taste it slowly. You will find a deep, savory flavor (we call it "Umami") that is very delicious.
💡 Health Expert’s Recommendations
If you don't know what to pick, try these:
DAIKON (White Radish): The big white circle. It acts like a sponge and soaks up the soup.
TAMAGO (Boiled Egg): A good source of protein.
SHIRATAKI (White noodles): These are konjac noodles. The best part? They have almost ZERO calories!
◆ My Personal Story
Actually, I used to work overseas in the past. During that time, I missed this Japanese winter comfort food so much. I always thought, "I wish I could eat Oden right now..."
It is a soul food for Japanese people. If you haven't tried it yet, please give it a try. It will warm you up from the inside!
