Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi

Next Tuesday, Feb 3rd is "Setsubun"! 👹

Our international guests might be wondering, "Why are Japanese people throwing beans everywhere?"

Don't worry, it's a traditional ceremony to mark the changing of seasons! 🌱

We shout "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" (Devils out! Fortune in!) while throwing roasted soybeans. The meaning is to drive away bad spirits and welcome happiness for the new spring.

Besides the beans, we also have a special food called "Eho-maki" (Lucky Direction Sushi Roll). 🍣

It’s a thick sushi roll, and there is a unique rule to eating it:

  1. Face the "Lucky Direction."

  2. Eat the whole roll without stopping.

  3. Stay completely silent until you finish! (If you speak, luck escapes!)

If you are new to Japan, you should definitely give it a try. By the way, this year's lucky direction is South-South-East (Nan-nan-to)! 🧭

I’m planning to do the bean throwing at home with my 3-year-old son. 👦🫘

Please rest assured, we won't throw beans at our patients here at the clinic! 😂 We look forward to seeing you soon.
