Missing the "Party" Vibe? Celebrate Lunar New Year in Yokohama & Tokyo!
If you felt that New Year's in Japan (January 1st) was a bit too quiet and solemn, get ready. The Lunar New Year (Spring Festival) is coming on February 17th, and it is loud, colorful, and delicious!
Here is how to enjoy the festivities in the Kanto area:
1. The Classic Experience: Yokohama Chinatown Located just a few stops from my clinic, this is the biggest celebration in Japan. Expect firecrackers, huge crowds, and the famous Lion Dance. If a lion "bites" your head, don't panic—it brings good luck and drives away evil spirits for the year!
Pro Tip: It gets incredibly crowded on weekends. Try visiting on a weeknight to see the beautiful red lanterns (Cai Deng) illuminating the streets.
2. The "Real" Vibe: Ikebukuro (Tokyo) For a more gritty, authentic modern experience, head to the North Exit of Ikebukuro Station. It is often called Tokyo's "New Chinatown." There are fewer tourists, but the food here is un-Japanized and authentically spicy.
3. Eat for Luck (and Health) In Traditional Chinese Medicine (which Acupuncture is based on), Spring is the season of "rising energy." Make sure to eat Dumplings (Jiaozi). Their shape resembles ancient gold ingots, symbolizing wealth for the coming year.
Feeling "People-Fatigue"? The energy of the Spring Festival is amazing, but the crowds can be exhausting. If you need a quiet place to reset your nervous system after the festivities, my acupuncture clinic in Yokohama is a peaceful sanctuary. We are English-friendly and ready to help you recharge!
Happy Lunar New Year! 🧧✨
