National Memorial Day for War Dead
Hello everyone. Today’s topic is a bit serious, but because tomorrow, August 15th, is a truly special day for us in Japan, I would like to share a little bit about our history.
August 15th is a profound day of the year when Japanese people reflect deeply on life and peace. We are currently in the middle of the Obon season, but August 15th also marks the anniversary of the end of World War II.
At noon on this day, many people across Japan stop what they are doing to observe a one-minute moment of silence. This is to mourn the precious lives lost in the war and to pray for peace, vowing never to repeat such a tragedy.
The overlapping of the Obon season—a time to honor our ancestors—and the anniversary of the end of the war serves as a powerful reminder. It makes us realize how our present lives are built upon history and the connections of countless people from the past.
In our busy modern lives, it is important to occasionally stop and reflect on the predecessors who passed the baton of life to us and paved the way for the peaceful everyday lives we enjoy. Tomorrow is a day that gives us that quiet time for reflection.
Considering the current global situation, I believe that our desire for peace is truly vital. I wish you all a calm and peaceful day.
