The beautiful Japanese spring. Did you know that traditional Japanese culture features a concept called "Nijushi Sekki"—dividing the year into 24 subtle micro-seasons?
We are currently in the season known as "Kokuu" (穀雨). Translating to "grain rain" and lasting until early May, this is a time when gentle spring rains nourish the earth and awaken the seeds.
The soil softens, and adorable little sprouts begin to peek out from the ground. It is the beginning of nature's preparation for a lush, green summer—a deeply poetic season unique to Japan. When walking the streets of Yokohama or visiting a nearby garden, please take a moment to notice the fresh green leaves, newly sprung from the earth, glistening in the rain.
However, while nature comes alive with the blessing of the rain, our bodies can sometimes struggle with the sudden changes in weather and temperature.
One of the main reasons visitors from overseas often feel unwell here is "Japanese humidity." This level of dampness in the air might be quite unfamiliar to those from Western climates. As a result, it can cause feelings of heaviness, fatigue, and upset stomachs.
Please do not push yourself too hard during this time.
When you feel tired, please value the time to rest quietly. On a rainy day, instead of rushing, it might be wonderful to simply listen to the sound of the rain, tune into your own body and mind, and enjoy the rain at a leisurely pace.
